[Bug]: WindowServer freezes when opening VS-Code
bug
hey @albert-mueller and @matteoiacca, I can't work on coding here (or anywhere) because I can't open VS-Code and have it work. I am still on the old root patch system and the reason I haven't updated is I don't have much faith in our root patching system right now. Especially since the root patching bugs showed up at the worst moment for me, when I was upgrading my main volume to Sequoia. And the lingering issues aren't going to help. I also can't help fix the issues, because well, this issue.
So what happens is I open VS-Code and it starts, the interface renders and then after a bit it freezes, the mouse can't move nothing works. Even the fans slow to a stop. the only thing to do is hold down on the ⏻ button. If you need me to create a crash to get any data, let me know.
GitHub actions bot, this is just for you:
macOS:
15.8.1
OCLPT2 version:
4.000.16 (or what ever the one before the broken root patches was)
Mac model:
MBP7,1

What you can try is to actually work in Visual Studio in the browser, or, GitHub itself. I usually do through the GitHub interface itself.

@albert-mueller thanks, I forgot about the browser, I will use that for the moment. To me the GitHub interface is not at all the best coding environment.
But I still want the app back.

@albert-mueller, I looked at it, and it can work for a bit, but Firefox has a issue
Your browser doesn't support opening local folders.and I don't think the extentions that I use would work. Thanks for the idea and I will use it now and then.

Hey @gandolf243,
That freeze happens because VS Code is an Electron app and tries to use GPU acceleration by default. On Sequoia with the GeForce 320M (non-Metal), the GPU process deadlocks the Tesla driver and locks up WindowServer.
You don't have to use the browser version. You just need to disable hardware acceleration so it uses CPU software rendering.
Since launching the app currently freezes your Mac, run this once in Terminal:
After running that, you can launch VS Code normally from your Dock/Spotlight—it won't freeze anymore and you can keep working on your local folders and extensions as usual.

@matteoiacca, thanks! I will try that when my Mac isn't in heavy use. It is weird that VS-Code worked in Ventura and Sonoma and that it is only now that this issue is showing!

@matteoiacca, thank you! VS-Code works again! In fact, I am responding to you from the GitHub extention that VS-Code has.

@Medelcartelinc, it still didn't work. I thought it did, but then when I was looking at a GitHub workflow in VS-Code, it froze everything again.
@Medelcartelinc ·
@gandolf243 That freeze occurs because Electron still triggers GPU rasterization in the Monaco editor, which deadlocks WindowServer with the GeForce 320M Tesla driver under Sequoia when handling background vibrancy.
To eliminate the lockup completely
Enable Reduce Transparency in Terminal to prevent WindowServer from freezing the 320M:
bash
defaults write com.apple.universalaccess reduceTransparency -bool true
In VS Code Settings (Cmd + ,), set:
Terminal > Integrated: Gpu Acceleration -> off
Editor > Minimap: Enabled -> uncheck
Alternatively, launch VS Code via open -a "Visual Studio Code" --args --disable-gpu --disable-gpu-compositing.
